What Visa Sponsorship Means for Support Workers
Support worker is a broad title that spans mental health, learning disability, physical disability, older adult, and substance misuse services. For visa sponsorship purposes, the critical question is not the job title but whether the employer is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Only CQC-registered providers can sponsor support workers under the Health and Care Worker visa. Support workers in housing associations, charities, or community organisations without CQC registration generally cannot be sponsored, even if the work is similar.
The going rate is approximately £23,200, the same as care workers, because both roles share SOC code 6145. The Health and Care Worker visa benefits — reduced fees and IHS exemption — apply when the employer meets the CQC requirement. The March 2024 dependant restrictions also apply.
The breadth of the support worker role means that day-to-day responsibilities vary enormously. A mental health support worker in a crisis team operates very differently from a learning disability support worker in a residential home. When applying for a visa, the job description must accurately reflect the duties — UKVI may refuse applications where the described role does not match the SOC code definition. Employers should describe personal care, health-related support, or therapeutic activities rather than generic "companionship" or "befriending" duties.
No formal qualifications are required, but employers increasingly expect the Care Certificate (a 15-standard induction programme) to be completed within the first 12 weeks of employment. Specialist settings such as mental health or substance misuse may require additional training in areas like safeguarding, de-escalation, or medication administration.
