What Visa Sponsorship Means for Radiographers
Radiography in the UK is split into two distinct professions with separate HCPC registers: diagnostic radiographers (who produce medical images using X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound) and therapeutic radiographers (who plan and deliver radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients). Both qualify for the Health and Care Worker visa with a going rate of approximately £28,000.
HCPC registration is mandatory. International radiographers must demonstrate that their qualification is equivalent to a UK-approved BSc in Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiography. The HCPC assessment considers course content, supervised clinical hours, and scope of practice. The English language requirement is IELTS 7.0 overall or OET Grade B.
Diagnostic radiography faces particularly acute shortages in CT and MRI modalities. NHS trusts sponsoring diagnostic radiographers often seek candidates with post-qualification experience in cross-sectional imaging. Sonography (ultrasound) is an additional specialism that requires post-graduate training and is in very high demand — sonographers with NHS experience can command salaries at Band 7 (approximately £36,000-£43,000).
Therapeutic radiography is a smaller profession with fewer overall vacancies but a highly concentrated employer base (cancer centres and specialist hospitals). The role requires specific knowledge of radiotherapy planning systems and treatment protocols. Both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers benefit from clear NHS career progression through Bands 5 to 8, and advanced practitioner roles are increasingly available.
