What Visa Sponsorship Means for Nurses

Nursing is the flagship Health and Care Worker visa role. The pathway from international nurse to UK-registered practitioner is well-documented, with dedicated recruitment programmes run by NHS trusts, agencies, and private healthcare providers. The going rate is approximately £28,407, aligned with NHS Agenda for Change Band 5, and the role sits on the Immigration Salary List.

The critical requirement is registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Overseas-trained nurses must complete a three-part process: first, a decision letter from the NMC confirming eligibility; second, the Computer-Based Test (CBT) covering numeracy and clinical decision-making; and third, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a practical assessment at an approved test centre. The English language requirement is IELTS Academic at 7.0 overall (minimum 6.5 in each section) or OET at Grade B in all four components. These are non-negotiable — there is no alternative pathway.

Unlike care workers, nurses are NOT subject to the March 2024 dependant restrictions and can bring their spouse and children to the UK. The Health and Care Worker visa also provides reduced fees and IHS exemption. Most sponsoring NHS trusts offer structured support including OSCE preparation, supervised practice placements, and pastoral care during the first year.

Specialist nurses (mental health, paediatric, learning disability) are in particularly high demand and may command salaries above the Band 5 minimum. Private sector roles — in care homes, private hospitals, and occupational health — also sponsor but may have different pay structures than the NHS.
