The going rate is approximately £33,000. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is the principal professional body, and Chartered status (CEng MICE) is the gold standard for career progression. International engineers can apply for ICE membership based on their existing qualifications and experience — the ICE has international assessment routes specifically designed for overseas-qualified engineers.
A BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering is the standard entry qualification. Specialist areas such as geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transport planning, and environmental engineering may fall under the same or adjacent SOC codes. The job description should accurately reflect the civil engineering nature of the work — roles that are primarily construction management or site supervision may be classified differently.
Standard Skilled Worker visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge apply. Civil engineering is not on the Immigration Salary List. UK construction projects often require security clearance (particularly for government infrastructure), and some roles on sensitive sites may have nationality restrictions that apply regardless of visa status.
