What Visa Sponsorship Means for Accountants
Accountancy benefits from strong international qualification reciprocity. The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification is recognised in over 180 countries, and holders can practise in the UK with minimal additional requirements. ACA (from ICAEW), CIMA, and equivalent international qualifications (CPA from the US, CA from India, South Africa, or Australia) are also well-understood by UK employers, often with exemptions from parts of the UK examinations.
The going rate for sponsored accountant positions is approximately £33,000, comfortably within the range that qualified accountants can expect. The Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) are among the largest sponsors in the UK across all sectors and routinely sponsor both newly qualified and experienced accountants. Mid-tier firms (BDO, Grant Thornton, Mazars) and in-house corporate finance teams also sponsor.
This is a standard Skilled Worker visa route — accountancy is not on the Immigration Salary List and does not qualify for the Health and Care Worker visa. Standard fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge apply. However, many sponsoring firms cover visa costs as part of their recruitment package, particularly for experienced hires.
The role covers a broad range of functions: audit, tax, advisory, management accounting, and financial reporting. When applying for sponsorship, the role must be classified accurately — financial controller, audit manager, and tax adviser roles may fall under the same or adjacent SOC codes. The specificity of UK tax law, IFRS reporting standards, and FCA regulatory requirements means that international accountants may need to familiarise themselves with UK-specific frameworks, even if their core competence transfers directly.
